Tips To Get The Best Results And Maximise Value Of Aerosol Paint

Aerosol paint is a quick and convenient way to protect and touch-up all types of surfaces and structures. It requires less preparation and equipment, and less mess. When used correctly, aerosol paint provides a consistent performance and high quality finish.

Here’s some tips to get the best results.

  • Surface preparation is the key to a good paint job. Ensure that the surface is completely clean and dry before you paint. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to abrade the surface, then clean to remove grease, oil, dirt, and rust.
  • Do the job outside when temperature is above 150C or only in a well-ventilated area. If done inside, keep doors and windows open until fumes disappear.
  • Safety first as always – Read the instructions on the can and use only as directed. Always use the correct personal protection such as gloves, safety glasses, face mask.
  • Put down a large drop cloth, and tape over any areas you don’t want painted.
  • Continuously shake the can for 2 minutes before you start. This ensures a consistent even film of paint.

  • For best results use the correct primer for the surface you are painting. This will help the paint adhere to the surface better and give a smoother surface. A primer will also enhance the colour of the finished product.
  • Ensure the spray nozzle is pointing away from you and others before depressing.
  • Hold the can about 30cm from the surface and spray with a sweeping motion; don’t hold and spray in any area or it’ll lead to droplets and an uneven coating.
  • 2-3 light applications are better than one heavy application, which can lead to drips.
  • After use, invert can and depress the nozzle for 3-5 seconds to clear the nozzle. This prevents residue paint from drying and clogging the spray nozzle for next time.

BONUS TIP – you can adjust the spray pattern by twisting the “red” actuator insert on the spray button!
