Women Tradies Make Their Mark + Win A Luxury Escape for Two!

Women Tradies Make Their Mark + Win A Luxury Escape for Two!

May 30, 2017

The demand for quality tradies in Australia has never been greater. While building approval numbers have eased slightly after record highs in 2016, the residential and commercial building markets remain immensely active. This increased activity, and increase in work, has led to a national skills shortage across most trades.

With this shortage, the best trade talent around can practically name their price, seeing the average hourly rate for Aussie tradies skyrocketing. Learning a trade in Australia has never been more appealing.

Helping to fill the gaps in the skilled labour market are the many young men who would have once pursued a university degree that are now foregoing the academia for an apprenticeship. But it’s not just the men, with one of the biggest shifts being the number young women also getting in on the action.

Recent data compiled by online contractor website shows just how big this shift has been, with almost 29,000 women having joining the site as of late last year. Almost 5000 of these members were from 2015 alone, which was a 490% increase on the previous year. The data also showed that painters, builders and electricians were the top three trades women were getting into.

The rise of designer workwear

With this increase in female tradies it’s no surprise that some of the biggest names in workwear and safety gear are now creating lines aimed specifically at women.

While companies like Oliver Footwear has been manufacturing women’s safety shoes since the mid-80s, the growing female market has seen an increase in R&D for women’s lines. This R&D has culminated in the release of the new PB 49 Series Workboots from Oliver. The PB 49 Series Workboots are engineered specifically to suit the unique shape of a woman’s foot, with unique features designed with women in mind.
